If you or someone you know suffers from a mental illness, it can be an extremely difficult thing to manage at times. A lot of people tend to overlook the issue because it’s not something that can be physically seen, like a broken leg – it’s inside the mind, and that can make things hard to treat. That doesn’t mean it’s impossible though. You can get through it, and you will.
Here’s how to stay above the water.
Ask for help
This is something that a lot of people struggle with, because asking for help seems to make people believe they’re weak – but this isn’t the case at all. There are people out there that are trained professionals to assist you with your problems. If you don’t feel like having to make an appointment face to face, as this understandably can be a little intimidating, you can go through the Online Dr App instead. There you can speak to professional anytime throughout the day with questions you have, or just a little bit of advice if you’re feeling really low, and they will do their best to give you the help you need.
Remember that in dark times, you are not alone. Share your concerns with any close family or friends that you have. Tell them you’re not doing well and aren’t sure what to do. Having someone that you love by your side will always give you that little bit of comfort you may need.
One day at a time
There will be good days, and there will be bad days – that’s just part of life. But when suffering from a mental illness, these emotions are heightened, and it’s very hard to keep your balance through these times. Rather than worrying about when your next low day will be, just focus on the now. Worrying will only raise your stress levels and bring you more anxiety, and that’s not what you need. Breathe through it, and enjoy the moments of tranquilness. Try having a routine for each day and write it down if you need to. Set an alarm and get up – don’t spend long days in bed, this will only keep you stuck.
Use your creativity
If there are things that you like doing, or know you’re good at – take advantage. If you play an instrument, like the piano or the guitar, practise your skills and get better. By focusing your energy on something positive, like music, you are creating that crack from the darkness to allow in the light. If music isn’t your thing, try art – painting and drawing is a good way expressing your emotions, especially when you’re not able to verbally. Try getting active too – go running, start boxing, or dance around your room – any form of activity will release endorphins in your brain that produce happiness, and that’s what you need.
