Our Summer Holiday In Lynmouth, North Devon

This year we decided to holiday in the UK and with the amazing weather we’re having, I’m so glad we did! In 1996 (way back when…) we discovered a beautiful town called Lynmouth, it’s just off Exmoor and is an absolute gem of a place. We spent many a summer in the following years staying in Lynmouth in all seasons. We started off staying in one of the many B&B’s and as the family grew we hired out cottages. Six years ago we booked two weeks in Lynmouth and it literally rained for six weeks solid! The twins were only one at the time and we were thankful that it was the Olympics on TV, so we had something to distract us from the constant drizzle, alternated with torrential rain! Following this experience we didn’t visit again until this week.

We have rented a cottage through Marsdens cottages and it has amazing sea views of Lynmouth harbour, there is even a telescope and it’s possible to see South Wales on a clear day. We arrived on a Friday and decided to stay around Lynmouth for the weekend before travelling off to the nearby coastline. We’ve had an amazing time so far, skimming stones on the river and sea, rock pooling, a few pints of cider, glitter tattoos, clotted cream, zipline and a very steep walk into Lynton. There is a cliff lift, but it would have been around £20 for the five of us!!?? All in fantastic sunshine.

The walk was stunning and breath-taking, both in the literal sense and due to the amazing views. There were even poems to read at every viewpoint. We headed to Lynton Museum, but it was closed – Google is your friend! We did look around the museum in Lynmouth dedicated to the terrible flood that the area experienced in 1952. Really sad to learn that 34 people lost their lives.

If you go the opposite direction to the coast from Lynmouth, you enter a National Trust area, which is beautiful. There is a walk which follows the river and ends up at Watersmeet where there is a tea rooms and shop. We set off on Sunday, but returned an hour later due to my husbands rather optimistic attempt to cross the river, which ended when one of the girls landed in the water. Guess what – I recorded the whole thing! It may feature on an episode of You’ve Been Framed in the future, watch this space!

Thankfully we could quickly get changed at our cottage nearby! That evening we spent hours on Lynmouth beach rock pooling and watching the sunset, beautiful! We are hoping this is the start of a wonderful week!
