Navigating Friendships in the Age of Ghosting

I was in a reflective mood the other day and started to wonder how much has changed over the years. As social media has become an every day part of our lives, have we allowed our scrolling habits to infiltrate our “real life” communication and interactions? has ghosting people become the norm?

One such example is friendship, I come from an era where friendships were two sided and needed to be worked on. Let’s face it, we are humans and misinterpretation of what someone has said, or messaged are common place. It only takes a comma to be in the wrong place or even worse an exclamation mark and the whole meaning of a message and tone can be blown way out of proportion. Humour too, is so easily misinterpreted!

I’ll never understand how people can spend months, if not years building a friendship or relationship, for it then to be disposed of when the going gets a bit tough. I can fully understand why people don’t communicate after a huge breech in trust, but after a minor misunderstanding? One minute you could be discussing relatively personal details about yourself and the day after you could pass each other in the street as strangers. Similar to scrolling past people’s social media posts, you scroll by each other without a second thought. Or maybe you do have thoughts and regrets, but it now feels too late to resolve because time has passed.

I have a friend, who once told me that if there was someone in your life who meant a lot, then don’t put off checking in on them, because one day they may not be around to check in on anymore. Time passes quickly and as I’ve got older, her wisdom rings true as I’ve definitely been guilty of this on at least two occasions. In a world of ghosting and scrolling past people it’s easy to put aside how your actions affects the other person. It’s not surprising how mental health, self esteem and self confidence in today’s society is at an all time low, when people are disposed of as easily as an old pair of shoes.

Be kind and take care.

Or you could get a dog to experience total devotion. Meet Evie, my 7 month old Golden Retriever puppy! Any tips on surviving her teenage years would be greatly appreciated!

Oh and I never knew that choosing a harness for Evie would be such a minefield. This one from Copenhagan is our next buy.

I would to hear people’s thoughts.
